Let’s say you’re reading these reviews and haven’t watched GoT yet, but are considering a marathon now that it’s over. In this case, the convention is correct, namely: 1-6 times: outstanding.
GoT is worth watching for these seasons, definitely
Deep world-building, intelligent dialogue, epic sets worthy of Hollywood, masterful acting, detailed plotting, genuine surprises, great soundtrack that is sparingly used. Season 7: You suddenly notice that the writing and plotting have taken a sharp drop in quality. There are inexplicable comments, inconsistent characterization and soap opera drama. But at least the entertainment value is still pretty high so it gets a pass.Season 8: This fall plunges deeper than you’d imagine.
Deadly for fiction
The writing is so amateurish that the fantastic production values still aren’t enough to save it. If you ever enjoyed Lost but were shocked by how bad the final season was, you’re in familiar territory here. The biggest problem with the final season is that it takes us out of the story and makes us think about its many weaknesses. We lost our suspension of disbelief.
Yes, the first 6 seasons are worth the disappointment
It ruined series-arcs to the point where rewatching the entire series was pointless. So can I recommend a GoT marathon for newbies? But it’s not the best series of all time. That may be the case, but putting the ball into the final stretch puts it behind the following super-series best suited for your marathon:Battlestar Galactica (2003-2008)Twin Peaks (all 3 seasons and the movie)Breaking Bad
